Re: Re: End of the year awards

Haven’t looked at the other numbers but Snell and DeGrom should be no brainers. Verlander and Sale great but they didn’t match Snell.

Re: End of the year awards

Sale was better but smell pitched the entire year.

Re: Re: End of the year awards

They were close definitely, Snell not a no brainer I just think he should get it. Sale injuries and lack of use at end hurt him. Meanwhile Snell was great at end and kept Rays in race

Re: End of the year awards

CY Young :
Scherzer (1),Nola (2),De Grom(3)
Snell (1),Diaz (2),Verlander (3)

MVP :
Yellich (1),Freeman (2),Arenado(3)
Betts (1),Snell (2),Ramirez (3)

ROY : Acuna & Ohtani
Coach : Counsell & Melvin

Re: Re: End of the year awards

I would certainly consider the great mike trout as number 2....or j.d.martinez...

Re: End of the year awards

Trout would be my number 1 if I didn’t feel so confident that MLB won’t allow him to win a third when Betts has been just as great this year (and BOS has been so dominant)

Re: Re: End of the year awards

Trout and De Grom do have outstanding season but after all.... this game is about winning...

As for JD Martinez, I will always go for a position player before a DH for MVP...

Re: End of the year awards

The game is about winning but MVP, Cy Young, ROY, etc are not.

Any standard that says Trout can’t win it on the grounds of team record would also invalidate Ohtani, Scherzer, DeGrom even as Cy Young, perhaps Snell, etc.

Re: Re: End of the year awards

It is quite up for everybody to have their own standards... mine includes a necessity for the MVP award to have a team with a certain success...

W-L still means something to me when a Cy Young is concern...

I don't see any major sports handing out an MVP trophy to the best player of a below .500 team... or a team down in the basement of the standings...

Why would it be different with baseball...

Re: End of the year awards

I definitely think winning is a factor but Trout won in 2014 despite the Angels only winning 74 games so it's not the biggest factor. However I certainly think that is why betts will win this years. Back in 2016 it was a similar situation but trout was much better than betts that year, where this year its debatable.

On a side note I hear you about position player over a Dh and obviously that is the reality but jd Martinez is the real mvp. He completely turned this team around. Betts went from an .800 ops to a 1.079 ops. He has been a great clubhouse presence and is the TRUE mvp imo. However I'm sure Betts will win.

just want to add 1 awardee. Craig Kimbrel as RPOY, and he is starting to make himself out to be the greatest closer ever. yes i said it. he'll need 5-7 more years like this, but his numbers are absolutely ridiculous for like 8 seasons now, name an RP who has put up numbers like he has over an 8 year period

Re: End of the year awards

Kimbrel is great and intimidating, but he allows too many walks...

Kimbrel still has a long way to go...

Mariano Rivera cracked baseball bats for 19 years...

i was hoping youd mention him. Kimbrel has a much lower career WHIP than Rivera, so kimbrel may give up an extra 1.5 Walks per 9 innings, but Rivera gave up an extra 2.2 HITS per 9 innings!

Re: End of the year awards

Rivera played for 19 seasons and Kimbrel for 8. So yeah, compare them in 8-10 seasons and if he's still on, he's the man. One difference might be the type of hits. Rivera gave up 60 HR in the 18 seasons he was full time RP/closer. Kimbrel has given up 35 already. I know Rivera gave up tons of cheap bloops because of the inside part of the bat cutters. But there's no denying Kimbrel is otherworldly too. He's just had half a career so far. Rivera obviously also hyped up because Yankees and because of his playoff numbers.

agree 100%. Rivera is one of those players (and i tink these players are VERY RARE) that was much much better than his stats suggest. and his stats are already very good.

anyway, was just pointing out that kimbrel probably was the best RP based on the usual stats that are looked at, and he has done it now for pretty much 8 seasons straight

Re: End of the year awards

Kimbrel relies a lot on a fastball, this is probably what will go away first when he gets older... velocity...

Riviera, Eckersley, Hoffman relied on a different pitch than the fastball to get people out... probably the main reason of their longevity...

Kimbrel will need to have is fastball hold along with age...never a great combo unless your name is Nolan Ryan....

Re: End of the year awards

ms reliever Edwin diaz gets no respect, tied for the 2nd most saves in history

Re: Re: End of the year awards

He’ll get respect, probably finish top 5.

Re: End of the year awards

Andujar and gleyber will win co rookie of the year award....

Re: End of the year awards

Mariano rivera, for almost 20 years.....

Re: Re: End of the year awards

For me, Diaz finishes 2nd in there behind Snell

Re: End of the year awards

Great call on Diaz. I forgot about him.

I wonder if the sox will resign kimbrel. We will see, I'd hate to see him go as clearly he can handle the pressures of playing in Boston. I just dont think they will sign him.

Re: Re: End of the year awards

kimbrel isn't far from career strikeouts, just over 300 away from rivera already haha

Re: Re: End of the year awards

if you compare diaz to gagne and ecks cy young seasons its pretty imprerssive diaz 57s 1.96era,124 k,17 bb, gagne 55,1.20,137,20 eckersly 51,1.91,93,11

Re: End of the year awards

Yes he’s deserving, just hard for a closer to beat out an SP with 21 wins (for a team that didn’t even win enough to make playoffs) and an ERA under 2.

Re: Re: End of the year awards

your right,i didn't realize his era was so low. tb came close to playoffs tho, they passed ms.ms now 17 seasons since playoff appearance, longest strteak in sports.even the browns have made the playoffs since ms last did
