I'm glad this happened right before the start of the Winter Meetings today - should see a lot of movement on the other players now.

Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
A lot of Yankees fans (myself included) are not gonna be happy about seeing Soto not only in a different uniform, but specifically the uniform of a cross-town rival. Steinbrenner and the rest of the Yankees front office really f*cked this one up, no other way to put it. This is gonna come back to haunt us very quickly, mark my words
You know a player was popular when you hear "re-sign Soto!" as a crowd chant in the frickin' playoffs

Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
This is gonna sound unhinged, but the sentiment I’ve been feeling over the past 24 hours is that Yankee fans almost would’ve preferred him to go to Boston. Obviously that’s not true but most could not be any angrier that he signed with little brother
Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
Not sure I agree Skooler. Yankees offered him a lot, he decided to go to the Mets. If he went there just because they offered him more money per year and a suite for his family, well then he clearly wanted to play for the Mets. If he wanted to stay with the Yankees, he would have, the offer wasn’t insulting. Judge wanted to stay and took less. Soto didn’t. Yankees move on, as do the other 28 teams.
On that note, it sucks now because he’ll obviously dominate. 15 year contracts are crazy though. Necessary, but crazy.
Anyway, lots of teams have won the World Series without Juan Soto. There are other ways. Also, going to the Red Sox would bother me much more than going to the Mets. And to me, no reason for any Yankee fan to have any hatred for him. Good for him going wherever he wanted to for whatever reason.

Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
The major problem i have with the Yankees losing him is that he was the only guy not named Aaron Judge who was hitting worth a d*mn last season. The Yanks lineup is definitely gonna feel this loss next season, regardless of who takes the open spot
Re: Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
Enno Sarris had an interesting evaluation of the Soto signing; based on projected WAR for Soto over the length of the contract - factoring in regression, the Mets paid 11.5 million per win. Willie Adames contract, at 7/182, was actually MORE expensive !! Again, based on projected career war over the length of his contract, the Giants paid 13 million per win.
Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
Steve Cohen is the new sheriff in town. Yankees won’t be able to keep up. Steinbrenner has money, but not Cohen money. Slowly, but surely, Cohen and Stearns will build a dynasty that the Yankees will envy.
Re: Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
Everyone should get a kick out of this - the 1910 Athletics "$100,000 infield".

Steven, as much as I don't want to believe it... I believe it
Unlike Steinbrenner, Cohen seems to have no problem spending money, especially since he has more available to spend

Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
It's just hard to believe that there's no salary cap or something similar in place that would give all teams a similar opportunity to build a roster with a mix of different players. Every year it's the same old thing - which of the top 5-10 richest teams are all the biggest stars going to go to, and the rest get the scraps from the master's table. What a bizarre system.
Re: Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
The players union is too strong to ever accept a salary cap but what MLB really needs is a salary floor. It's beyond pathetic that there are teams that spend 40 mill for their whole rosters and the big market teams can spend more for one player.
Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
Ironically, the Players Union would love a "Floor" - it's the owners that won't go for it.
Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
Everyone lost their minds when Reggie Jackson signed his FA contract with the Yankees in 1976 - 3 yrs, 3.3 million (a little over 16 mil in today's dollars). The A's became, basically, the Yankees farm club and with them also signing Catfish Hunter, the beginning of the original "Evil Empire".
Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
The only way I can see either a cap or a floor being implemented is if both sides reach an agreement on both being added at the same time
Re: Re: The Biggest Domino Falls
The problem with a floor and no cap is that the owners want to win and will continue to spend insane amounts of money on contracts and pass at least some of those costs on to the fans. The average Joe fan has been priced out of attending games on a regular basis. So many seats are sold to corporate buyers these days. There’s not an endless supply of money for people. Just a sad state of affairs. I used to love going to games but it’s a lot tougher now.
