Computing OBP

Computing OBP

I am curious - How does PC compute OBP and OPS? I have found numerous times where what Baseball reference shows for players is different than PC - and PC is generally higher Examples

Ron Hunt 1969 Hits 125 + 51 BB +25 HBP = 201 / PA =569 = .361
in PC he is .363

for OPS

Greg Vaughn - 2001 - 113 Hits + 71 BB + 3 HBP = 187 / 562 AB + 71 BB + 0 SF + 3 HBP = .766 in PC it's 768

Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Computing OBP

My guess is that sacrifice flies do not factor into PC OBP (because there's no place to input them), whereas obviously they do in real life.

This seems to be the case for Hunt, at least, rounded. Did not check Vaughn.

Re: Computing OBP

That’s it exactly. SCM numbers above are off a bit, 201/569 doesn’t equal 361. Need to take away the 12 SH, 201/557 = 361. Then take away the 3 SF and 201/554 = 363.

Vaughn has no SH but he had 3 SF so his OBP 187/562 = 333 and without the 3 SF 187/559 = 335 making OPS 2 points higher also.

Re: Re: Computing OBP

Ok then, I really wasn't doing anything wrong then, PC simply computes it a bit differently.

Re: Computing OBP

Is this the same reason that dwar on bbref is different sometimes from pc ? They are using slightly different stats ? Another ? is how is a plus arm determined ? I'll use Ichiro as an example ,in pc he never has a season with a plus arm but anyone who watched him from 2001 on knew he had one of the best and accurate arms in the history of the game. I realize that this is definately a subjective designation but is there a rhyme or reason for it. If it's based on outfield assists this could be misleading because once you get a rep like ichiro , people will stop testing you.

Re: Re: Computing OBP

Mrbubbles has a great point, Mickey Rivers in some seasons has a plus arm, that is so wrong, that guy had one of the weakest arms I can recall except maybe Johnny Damon, BUT, because they were so fast and caught balls no one ever thought they would get to they doubled a lot of guys off.

Unfortunately there is no way that the SIM can account for that disparity, it's stats driven and because runners knew enough not to try them they don't get the credit they are due, in fairness, how would you account for that?
