It was pretty obvious that the Padres were out when they started spending their International money - Toronto was in it, I guess, but really ?

Re: Sasaki
Well that seems fair. Poor Dodgers really need a decent starter to give the fans some hope for the upcoming season. Boo. This system sucks.
Re: Re: Sasaki
Seems like parity is gone in MLB. Have to be blind not noticing this is getting simply disgusting. This is just looking like Montgomery Burns trying to overkill competition by purchasing a Dream Team. I will 100% boycott MLB.com this season. Dont deserve my $$$, Just hope many people will. This is just more and more about pulling a middle finger to baseball fans. And what about this anticlimax and this stalled off season. Everything to have fans angry at the game they love.
To conquer without danger we triumph without glory !
I used to love that franchise, but it now makes me want to puke. The MLB system is clearly flawed and rotten to the bone.

Re: Sasaki
It does feel like the late 90s all over again, few teams have a chance, a small handful of teams spend an ungodly sum of money. At least we have PC!
Re: Sasaki
Many people (including myself ) think that MLB could use a salary cap ala the NFL. So why does it seem that despite getting the best picks every year its the same teams that are always at the bottom ? Sometimesit's just a matter of a poorly run organization. How many qb's have the Browns had in the last 20 years is a prime example. You would think the odds would come up their way at least once.
Re: Re: Sasaki
I’m not a Dodger hater at all - I love their history and have loved many of their teams and players - and I don’t blame any of the teams or players for playing within the rules that exist. It’s the rules that stink. Parity would be the best case scenario for all the fans of this great game but it just won’t happen within the current rules. The draft is great for letting the weaker teams pick up great young talent, but they do often don’t get to keep the best players for very long because of Free Agency and players having the right to choose where they will and won’t play (or be traded to). And then add in these International signings on top of that (where the best of the best from around the world get to choose where they want to play - and guess what - it’s almost always going to be New York or Los Angeles - and it just makes an already unfair system worse.
Re: Sasaki
And just imagine how much grief GBacci would get if a commish on PC decided to let a few teams pick up the best players from a Japanese league after the draft was finished, players that weren’t available to any of the other teams just because the players wouldn’t have wanted to play there anyway. It wouldn’t work at all here in PC land, but in reality it’s fine. Weird.
Re: Sasaki
As is their right in a free market. Players do deserve to have trade clauses IMO. I get to chose where i work. Disregard the salaries a minute. Freedom of choice. There re some smaller market teams that can spend more. They just dont. What is fair? Fair is something where pigs are judged and cotton candy sold.
I dont like the Dodgers at all. But they do what they can do. Remember this. How many rings do they have as a result? I seem to remember forums about wild card teams getting to the WS too much after the 100+ teams were sent home.
Let them win 110 games this year and we will see what happens in a 5 game series then a couple of 7 gamers. Still gotta win in October.

Re: Sasaki
The short series is the great equalizer. Just had a team finish 76-78, make the playoffs as the final wildcard, go 12-6 and win it all. I agree with Mr Griddy. Freedom of choice in your chosen profession is important.
Re: Re: Sasaki
I agree - freedom of choice is important, and a good thing, but it always needs to come with some parameters. Like, not everyone who wants to can be the Wal-Mart greeter at the Walmart on the corner of 7th and Main. You have to wait for the other guy to die. And not everyone who wants to can play for the Yankees or Dodgers. There are some obvious limits to that freedom of choice. I just think adding another limit or two - like some sort of salary cap or something similar that would give the smaller market teams an equal benefit, would be a good thing for the game and for the fans.
Re: Sasaki
Yes. There are limits. Freedom of choice I am referring to is the path you want to walk in life. Married to "do unto others". I am still waiting for that greeting job.
Re: Re: Sasaki
It was always my dream to be a Frito-Lay sales Rep. When I was a little kid and I would see one of their trucks, I'd tell my father "Dad, one day I'm going to drive one of those trucks". And I finally made my dream happen -just like "Roki of the Year" Sasaki, who wanted to be a Dodger - and who can blame him ??? !!!

Re: Sasaki
Sheik, how do you have time to win so many games on PC when you're driving the Frito Lay truck around all day?
Re: Re: Sasaki
Oh hell, I'm a retired Frito-Lay sales rep, that's how !! 😎😎😎 Also a Sara Lee Distributer for 8 years and have been retired now for 12 years.
Re: Sasaki
Tanner Scott to LAD now. Bregman, Alonso and Santander headed there soon also, probably 😂
Re: Sasaki
The Dodgers don't pay market value for RP's, so unless Scott can't find a home and settles for a 1 year contract, he won't be wearing a Dodger uniform. I think they are looking around for more BP help and they'll get around to signing Kiki eventually. I know there's a lot kidding about the Dodgers spending, but they are pretty smart about how they spend.
Re: Re: Sasaki
@sheikyerboudi They signed him today to a 4 year deal: ? https://www.mlb.com/news/tanner-sco..
Re: Sasaki
Oh sh_t !! Yeah, just saw that 4/72. Well, they probably did it just so Ohtani wouldn't have to face him anymore !! Talk about "All In" !! Sorry about that, I should have read your post more closely.
Re: Re: Sasaki
And of course, "The deal includes a $20 million signing bonus and $21 million in deferred salary." Bonus doesn't count against the "Cap", Dodgers are now at 375 mil, surpassing the Phillies.
Re: Sasaki
They were having a discussion on Hot Stove this morning that as interesting. Instead of these foreign players coming in as automatic FA's, there should be a FA draft. MLB players earn FA through time served in the MLB. They should be treated the same and it would give smaller market teams a chance at the players at a fair market. They wouldn't draft them if they couldn't afford them. There would also be a minimum salary. I believe they were talking somewhere along the lines of $4 million per.
Also, the Dodgers now have over a billion dollars in deferred money. Yes, a Billion.

Re: Re: Sasaki
From Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic:
The Dodgers, though, also are schooling opponents with a relentless mindset not enough rival ownerships share. Are they ruining baseball? From a financial perspective, at least, it’s the opposite. As rich as the Dodgers are, they’re improving the bottom lines of other teams, too.
The Dodgers’ road attendance last season, following the addition of Shohei Ohtani during their $1 billion offseason, was the highest in the majors since 2008, according to STATS Perform. They were the largest contributor to revenue sharing, and half of their record $103 million luxury-tax penalty also was redirected to other clubs.
Trickle down economics ?

Re: Sasaki
Yeah it's probably just fine for the financial bottom lines of the teams and team owners and shareholders and all other big wigs, and that's always how these stories get reported - from the point of view of those at the top. It would be interesting to hear it reported from the point of view of Joe Shmo trying to afford to take his kid to a game, or even to purchase the sports package for his cable subscription which keeps changing and trying to get more of his money by making him subscribe to all these specialty channels who are now trying to hone in on the market a grab a few games here and there.
