Starters working in the Pen

Starters working in the Pen

Is it possible to put a 6th or 7th Starter into your Bullpen rotation? If so, how do I put him there?

Re: Starters working in the Pen

You cannot put a starting pitcher as part of your main 5 man bullpen unless he is switched to an RP, though you can make one of your SPs your Long RP in your bullpen.

Hope this helps :)

Re: Re: Starters working in the Pen

If you have more than 5 starters even though you cannot slot them as RP's they will enter the game if you RP's are tired -

I can see the 6th guy as the Long Reliever or spot starter in case of injury, but you really should not have the ability to use starters in the Pen it can provide an unfair advantage if you have back to back extra Inning games against the same opponent.

Re: Starters working in the Pen

How would that hypothetical situation create an unfair advantage? You're using the pitchers you have, same as the other guy

Re: Starters working in the Pen

Yeah not sure what was meant there. Teams use starters in the pen all the time, because they can only have 5 in rotation. So besides being realistic, it’s also pretty smart here for the reason mentioned, long games use up RPs and their low 20s stamina.

Re: Re: Starters working in the Pen

Right, long games use up RP's so if the other team has SP's unassigned as a starter or besides the Long Reliever then they are in fact using a Starter as a Reliever.

If you have a couple of those guys you get an advantage over people who use relievers in the Bullpen., in case of back to back Long, or high scoring games

I have seen teams with 2 RP and 4 SP in the Bullpen, that doesn't seem right - they trade their RP for Hitters and grab SP's - who don't tire as quickly - the other guy runs out of RP and has a dead arm out there they don't - seems to be jobbing the system a bit

In Auto and Daily Draft Leagues you have have 5 of each after the draft- so if you end up with 2) RP and 4)) SP in the pen because you traded 3 away, isn't that kinda like when Gus drafted more than 5 OF and then changed their positions? It's not in the spirit of the rules.

In Custom Leagues do whatever the League allows

Re: Starters working in the Pen

To me it's just good strategy. Kind of like having a 3rd catcher in the minors in case of injuries. Why wouldn't I have some SPs in the bullpen, or at least some high Stamina RPs, for the exact reason that SCM gives. It's not jobbing the system, it's just planning ahead for the inevitable weirdness that baseball continually dishes out. That's what I love about this game.

But I don't think this actually comes into play all that often in any given season. Sure you could have two really long extra-inning games in a row at some point, but how often is that actually going to happen. Pretty rare, I would think. But still, good to be prepared for whatever might come.

Re: Re: Starters working in the Pen

I always carry 6) SP and generally slot the 6th one as my Long Reliever- I don't want to burn up all my RP in a Game I'm probably far behind in

if you only have 5) SP and get an injury to a Starter your screwed, so carrying 6 makes sense

Of course it also seems like a lot of times that my Long guy comes in, my Starter got injured, so I'm still screwed - LOL

Re: Starters working in the Pen

If you really want to dump all your RPs and only have SPs in your pen, you could do that, but typically you're going to have better stats on your RPs than the dregs of the SPs. If you're trading for 10 great SPs, well that's a different issue...
