WAR Budget Advise

WAR Budget Advise

Hey, I just wanted to see if some of the players having success in the WAR Budget format have some advise. Favorite Teams is my favorite format, but I've been really struggling to put together winners in the new WAR Budget format. My strategy has been: spend big on 2 or 3 SP's (low WHIP and H/9 guys with good K/9), then look for bargains to fill out the rotation. Look for bargains for the bullpen (maybe spend 2-3 WAR on a stud bullpen arm if he's truly elite). Spend big on offensive starters (trying to get 4-5 1.000+ OPS guys), and get good D up the middle (SS, 2B and CF). This recipe has worked in the other formats, but I keep topping out at a few games over .500.

I think ultimately what I'm missing is an encyclopedic knowledge of high performing, low WAR players who just barely hit the IP and AB minimums, but help me out if there's something else I've overlooked. Thanks yall.

Re: WAR Budget Advise

The strategy you describe is a great way to build a team in any league.

Having recently jumped in to Franchise Leagues because of the fantastic and fair Budget War draft, it seems to me that the real formula to win is: Get very good at using Baseball Reference, master the various Budget War draft tools in PC, play a lot of leagues, try to make your teams incrementally stronger the next season (if possible), make it to the playoffs as often as possible, and have your team get hot in the playoffs. There can be only one, but there always will be one.

Not sure who the best at Franchise Leagues is, but looking at win totals of several very active Franchise GMs, it doesn't seem like anyone has figured out how to win with most of the Franchises.
