MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Manager and General manager suspended for a year

Forfeit 1st and 2nd Round Picks in 2020 and 2021

$5,000.000.00 Fine

Former Assistant Brandon Taubman placed on Ineligible list

Pretty tough, but I think accurate punishment - so they just hire a manager for 2020 (or promote a coach which is more probable) But finding a 1 year replacement at GM is like locating a Unicorn, who wants that gig??

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Word is that Cora will go down for more - he was the one who devised the system in 2017 for Houston and carried it over into Boston.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

And yes, as a Dodgers fan, this pi_ses me off.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

For a fan of any team that got cheated, you SHOULD be Pissed!

I know punishment is coming for Cora as well, however I believe it's only concerned with Boston using their Video room to steal signs,

Cora has a reputation as a sign stealing expert, which if done the Non Cheating Old fashioned way, I have no issue with, However the Boston cheating scandal is illegal and I do expect some punishment and harsh as well, Boston was caught before using an Apple Watch, this is a second offense, not a good look at all.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Cora was the architect of the Astros system and took charge of implementing it. He has not been charged yet due to the Redsox inverstigation that he's also involved in - when it concludes, he will be disciplined for both violations.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Jim Crane, the Astros owner, is on MLB network right now announcing that he has fired the Manager and GM - they won't return after the suspensions.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Crane should not be allowed to fire them, the punishment loses some of it's sting, now he just goes out and hires two people who know it's not a 1 year gig, MLB should not allow it!!

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Nothing but a slap on the wrist and it's disappointing. The loss of picks was expected and I like the severity of that.....but this won't hurt for a team like Houston.

$5M fine to the team? That's almost chump change. If they really wanted to make it a punishment, they should've taken from their international pool.

I guess the suspension doesn't matter at all now but I was wholly hoping that the title would be vacated. This is just an absolute gross disrespect to the game. A loss of picks and a simple fine is not nearly enough

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

There was never a chance of the Title being taken away, MLB would never do that, but I also think it's not enough, not sure what else they could though besides lowering their cap total by like 20 million and forcing them to either trade stars or take a huge luxury tax hit.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Yankees lost ilto boston and houston because of cheating, it should have been dodgers yankees tge past 2 world series and one of these franchises should have been crowned champs but the cockyness from the managers, especially cora, really is what irkes me most. Hinch i almost feel bad for because it was said he tried to stop.it by destroying the monitor twice, but why not say hey stop it? I sqy beltran should be punished too, but then i remembered he is managing the mets so thats punishment enough i guess....haha

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

I'm happy enough with the punishment - losing the draft picks was huge - and it's not like MLB made Cincinnati give back their 1919 Championship - but everyone will always remember the 2017 Championship as being tainted. I think some of the Astros cocky attitude will go away......

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Wouldn't be surprised if they were thrown at the first two weeks. That franchise has lost all sense of respect around the league

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

HOU pitching had a bit to do with their winning. Although, I did hear they were able to steal signs from their own catchers without the use of technology.

Thankfully, Washington knocked them off this season.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

To echo the sentiments of a previous comment, using technology is crossing a line. But otherwise, if you've spent time playing this great game, then you know, "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'." With all the advancements, it was only a matter of time before we met the baseball equivalent of the New England Patriots. Makes me cringe for the day when the masses clamor for CPU umpires. Teams will be hiring geeks to hack into THAT system to manipulate balls and strikes. Calling it now.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Jay, that is practically a given outcome. Computer umpires controlling the outcomes of games, to me, is a disaster waiting to happen. Computers are so easily hacked anymore, so what could possibly stop MLB teams (maybe even Minor League teams could perhaps attempt it themselves too) from doing it to the computer umpires' software? Unless they lock these suckers down, or somehow, someway, find ways to prevent technology from being used to steal signs, I remain completely against this change.

P.S. I know sign-stealing is inevitable, but using tech to do it is disrespectful to the great game of baseball.

Trivia Question: How did teams do it decades ago? Certainly not with technology! That's where the line gets crossed, since tech makes it so easy to do so...

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

In 10 years mlb is gonna fold and it will be played on pennant chase and they will be televising us and we will be making millions and millions of dollars and guy will be a multi billionaire.....

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

We're gonna need a union.......

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

I like how you think. Lol

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

We are owners, we dont like unions.....hahaha

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

MLB had to make it clear to other GM's and Manager's to end the culture of using technology to cheat. I think they sent a strong message. The next team will get crushed. Cora's punishment should be more severe. I understand why they didn't go after the players because the union would have gotten involved and dragged it out even longer. The players from both HOU and BOS will feel the wrath of the fans 81 times this year. They are now officially the two most hated teams in MLB.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

well does cora have a punishment since he was the ringleader of the sign-stealing in 2 organisations astros and red sox

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

"The players from both HOU and BOS will feel the wrath of the fans 81 times this year. They are now officially the two most hated teams in MLB."

Kind of a blanket statement I think the Fans will be more upset with the Coaches and Management that allowed this chicanery to go on then with their players, I mean who are they going to be pissed at? it's the Bench guy's at worst.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

HOU's team had the greatest hitting season of all-time, by some metrics. Knowing what is being thrown sure does help.

It affects PC, too. The numbers for BOS and HOU hitters are surely better than they would have been if they couldn't sit on fastballs.

The players should be blamed, too, but they won't be... until their numbers tank next season (Rafael Devers, George Springer, Bregman...).

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

That's an excellent Point Sol, think of this, The Red Sox won the World Series in 2018 with almost all the same players as from 2017, what was the BIG Change - the addition of J.D. Martinez and Alex Cora

J.D. Martinez can FLAT OUT HIT, but even he would have benefited from knowing what's coming, again, if done LEGALLY I have no issue with it, but cheating is just not right.

Too conspicuous of a Team improvement to not notice.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

I've been upset with the lack of punishment here.

Four draft picks hurts, but it's not severe. All 30 teams would trade $5M and four draft picks for a World Series title. I hope most wouldn't cheat to do it, but the punishment is peanuts.

But the thing that upsets me most is that there were no player punishments. The players did the cheating!!!

Knowing what pitch is coming is MUCH more helpful than steroids or HGH. The penalties for the players should have been WORSE for this than it is for PEDs. But barring that... every player who participated should have had at least a one-game ban so it would be "on their record" that they cheated. Instead, they get to go into the he-said she-said category with all of the suspected-but-not-proven PED guys. There should have been something for the known cheaters.

I think players will stop taking PEDs and will hire camera guys instead. You get MUCH more help with NO CONSEQUENCES. It's disgusting. But you'd have to be an idiot to take PEDs knowing that there's a better (and league-condoned) form of cheating available to them.

It also irks me that the GM and Manager took severe penalties while the owner took basically no penalty. It's like... "It was organization-wide, so we had to go to the top and make them pay the price. Well... not the TOP... that guy won't get penalized, but the next two guys below him will pay the full price."

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

in the early days of baseball ,the umpire would be behind the pitchers mound.if there was a play at the plate he would run to put himself in position to make the call.hall opf famer john McGraw would take advantage of this by routinely going from first to 3rd by cutting across the pitchers mound and skipping 2nd.is what the sox and stros did ok? of course not,but has cheating been going on forever.yes it has.but if you get caught be prepared to face the consequences.whats even sadder is that the astros losing draft picks the mariners will still be worse for years to come

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Mr Bubbles... I think this can still be done in college baseball. I forget the exact situations where it works, but I believe it's third base that can often be skipped.

And while I agree that cheating has always existed in every game in the world, I think it should be punished when it's caught.

This is the first instance I can think of where players have been caught cheating and faced zero repercussions. And it's not like one player skipped a base one time and got a slap on the wrist. This was like PEDs, only more players participating and with greater effect. And yet, zero punishment for the players. Nothing.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

I think the blanket statement is that the fans will generally boo the hell out of the Astros and Red Sox. I know that they are my too least favorite teams. The cheating only adds to my dislike of them.
How does MLB discipline the players if no specific names are released? If there are, 5-10 game suspensions would be awesome, but the damn union will challenge everything. Unions are not about doing what is "right", they are all about protecting their own, even when they are in the wrong. I am guessing that Manfred doesn't want to get caught up in that mess especially with the current contract up soon. Not saying it is good, but I understand why they just want to focus on the GM/Manager.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

And down goes Cora.......

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

And likely not done. Expecting a multi year ban at the least

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Jay: I'm sure the fear of the union had a big part of it. But they don't shy away from banning players for PED's. This is worse in my opinion. But yes, I agree that they are afraid of the publicity of a drawn out appeal.

And... I think players were granted immunity for their cooperation, so they don't really have an option to punish them now. And who knows what they would have been discovered had the players not been granted immunity.

I'd be furious if I was the manager and GM. Basically the two most powerful parties (the owners and the players) agreed to make the third group (management) the fall guys.

Houston comes out with barely a slap on the wrist. The players come out with even less punishment than that. They're both happy. Management - sans owner - bears the full brunt of the punishment.

And then to top it all off... management gets to cut the GM and manager instead of keeping their positions for them. The Yankees tried to do that when ARod was suspended, but they were (rightfully) blocked from doing so. The folks with the power and money win... sorry to the GM and manager, who have less of both.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

And down goes Beltran......

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

While I doubt MLB will ban them for life, I also doubt that any of them gets any kind of decent job in Baseball again, and as for Cora, who refused to go to the White House because he said Trump was unethical, and above the rules, how does Karma feel??

Holier than thou while cheating, I wouldn't hire him to judge a pie eating contest.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

heres a ? for everyone.while I don't condone what the astros and sox(and who knows who else))have done theres this.why is a player who studies video of pitchers called a student of the game? or its ok to steal signs from 2nd?ever watch a game on tv,see those guys behind home plate holding up radar guns.those are asdvance scouts.isnt a radar gun "technology"? is the hidden ball trick cheating?basically what im saying is that there has always been a fine line in the game when it comes to these matters.doctoring the bat or ball that's definitely cheating, but using your knowledge?like yogi berra onnce said 90 pct of baseball is half mental.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

No one is saying that stealing signs by studying the opposition without the use of technology is unfair, because it isn't, its allowed and if you are adept at it you get an advantage.

A Radar Gun is useless, " Ok he is consistently hitting 95 MPH"- Ok, Mr. Batter, simply ready your swing for a 95 MPH pitch and you are all set"

OOPS Curve ball, oops, change up, oops slider

It doesn't work that way.

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

what im trying to say is what is the difference if your looking at the catcher with your eyes from 2nd or from video.you still have to figure them out and use your knowledge.nfl teams use video and pictures during the game and that's ok.one mans cheating is another mans knowledge

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

I'm sorry but that's quite naive to lessen the seriousness of the issue. Likening watching past game film to using real-time technology to know what pitch is coming? That line was firmly crossed the moment they installed that hidden camera in center field. Like it was mentioned, being able to interpret signs from 2nd base is a skill that base runners learn and shows their IQ. Knowing how to finesse your way to have an advantage is not cheating. Installing something, or now that it's a thing, wearing shoulder buzz devices to gain an advantage is a COMPLETELY different story

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

every major league team uses advance scouts.they sit in the stands with binoculars and make game notes.they pass their notes oin to the team to gain an advantage.were arguing semantics here.im not saying they didn't cheat im saying its just different ways of learning.like I said b4 watch the nfl .a qb comes off the field and the 1st thing you see is an assistant handing him film or video

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Football is a completely different story. The different hand signals that catchers use are meant for the pitcher and the pitcher only. Watching film on an iPad in the NFL is equivalent to watching the film during game time in MLB as you said yourself.

If the advance scouts are good at their job, they'll relay that information, the players will learn about it, and if they're at 2nd base, they can use that knowledge to their advantage; again, as you said. THAT'S completely fine. But please....don't use "learning" in any way to describe what happened here. Cheating doesn't involve learning much other than finding other ways to cheat.

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

I love how the owners have thrown the managers under the bus while the players get off scot free.this is baseballs dirty little secret.been going on for years.just like in steroid era everyone knew.barry bonds head increased 3 hat sizes!! normal human biengs heads stop growing after puberty.I lived in Tacoma when McGwire and Canseco played there in minors.went to germany for 4 yrs in army and when I got back to states I knew something wasn't right they turned into the hulk.in the 70s there were boewls full of speed for the players to take.i could go on and on buit the point is baseball has an airport worth of luggage in their closet

Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

So many skeletons in the closet that you'd think you stepped into an Indiana Jones movie

Re: Re: MLB's Punishment to the Astro's

Don't forget MLB violating the RICO statutes to engineer the theft of the Expos from Montrèal
