Looking for Advice

Looking for Advice

I am currently in the brainstorming period for starting my first custom league and was hoping for some input from the PC community.

I'm thinking of making a 16 team league for the Hall of Very Good players as determined by the players with the highest career WAR for each position that are not in the hall of fame but could be (I plan on using LF, CF, RF and not OF for primary positions).

I've pretty much settled on 50 position players for each spot but am somewhere in the 120-150 player range for SP and RP.

Just a quick note. I planned on making this a keeper league where you have to either change seasons, trade, or release your players each season. This is to encourage variety and make it so we don't have to redraft each season.

The big thing I haven't settled on is how many divisions to have and how many playoff teams to have. I don't really have much of a preference, and would like to hear from other users to see what people would be most interested in a 16 team league.

If I didn't explain something well enough or if you have a suggestion please feel free to reply.

Re: Looking for Advice

sounds interesting. 16 teams is just about perfect in my opinion, anything more and it's tough to find that many dedicated owners. Anything less and the teams get super stacked. I'm curious about the change seasons idea, could you change back and forth or would you keep track of each season that has been used?

Re: Looking for Advice

The way I have done it is either:
1- Two 8 team divisions. 2 division winners get byes. 4 WC. Next 4 best records. 6 teams total.

2-Two 8 team conferences. Two 4 team divisions in each. @ division winners and 2 WC make playoffs per conference.

With this one I create my own unbalanced schedule so there are more division and inner conference games with some inter conference games to make winning division valuable.
You get 2 more playoff teams with the 2nd option.
One thing I have learned is the playoffs are a crap shoot on PC, is to make all playoff series 7 games so an excellent WC doesn't get hosed by losing 2 of 3 or 3 of 5 in the first round.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Re: Looking for Advice

KRTyler, my plan was to have all owners choose their players seasons before games start with those stats being locked in for that year. I already have spreadsheets with all the players so I planned on using that to keep track of seasons that have been used.

I also planned on providing league members a view-only link to the spreadsheet so they can see what positions would be used each season and keep track of what they’ve already used.

The one thing I haven’t decided is whether I should let owners change seasons for a guy they sign or trade for mid season

Re: Re: Looking for Advice

JimGriddy, I really like the second option. Having divisions that actually matter seems more realistic to me and maybe it can help create some good friendly rivalries

Re: Looking for Advice

I really like the idea of changing seasons - not only does it add value to players with long careers but it adds a bit of strategy to be able to pick the seasons and order of the seasons. Very cool idea - if you need owners let me know when the league is up.

Re: Re: Looking for Advice

I haven't seen any leagues try this before but it seemed like a decent compromise so we'll see how it goes. I'll definitely get back to you when the league is up.
