Set Up/Closer

Set Up/Closer

I'm looking at strategy options and I don't see an option to not bring in set up or closer when starting pitcher is cruising. I had my starter pulled in the seventh with a 2-0 lead before he reached his pitch count because my strategy setting says bring in Set Up in eighth, closer in ninth. Any way to override that in situation where starter is in complete control and pitch count is low? Thanks.

Re: Set Up/Closer

There is not currently. Most people for that reason avoid a setup pitcher I think...

Re: Set Up/Closer

yeah don't bother with setup or closer tbh. If you have a 95 rank closer, they're only going to pitch 50-70 innings each season. But if they're your number 1 RP out of the pen, they'll pitch double the innings.

Why save your best RP for when you're already winning? Wouldn't you want that best RP to be the first to come out after an SP screws up and you need someone to limit runs while your offense tries to catch back up? Lots of people lose games because their best 2 RP's are SU and CL and don't get to pitch when the team needs them.

Re: Re: Set Up/Closer

Yes true, but say your starter gets knocked out in the 5th inning, do I want to tire out my BEST pitcher in a game I am probably losing anyway?

Then the next game when you need him he's on the bench tired.

I'm not saying your wrong, but it happens a LOT

Re: Set Up/Closer

SCM, you’re right, sometimes they’ll come in down 5 runs and feel wasted, but otherwise, I’d want them in every other situation from down 4 to up 5 (in a 6 run game the back of bullpen comes in unless there are runners in base.) There are far more times I’d miss that RP being in game than worry about him being wasted. Believe me, whenever I’m up by 1 run I’m happy to see that top reliever or two wasting away on my opponent’s bench while I increase my lead. I want my best relievers in every close game, not just when I’m up 1-3 runs in the 9th.

Re: Re: Set Up/Closer

What Yankee said. It's a numbers game. Do you want your best rate stat pitcher period in for 45-60 games and 60-80 IP a season or 75-100 games a year and potentially well over 100 IP a season.. you waste opportunities using Closers. IMO
