Player Defensive Value
I have not seen this before..........in Auto League 1174 Random Players,,,,,,,I have a player Redus. who's primary position is OF. Yet he does not have a fielding percentage value. I'm assuming this needs to be corrected. If not, is he currently prone to make errors or would he not make any errors.
Re: Player Defensive Value
My guess is he'd have lots of errors (i've seen something that feels vaguely similar with a full time DH who is listed as DH(OF) but then has no fld % maybe because they had 0 fielding chances that season... but I can't remember specifically who that was now)
However, I think this would be a great experiment! It's really rare to find these quirks of the game. I'd start him and watch about 10 games - If he makes 4 errors, you'll have your answer that he's not 1.000 fld and can adjust accordingly (play a backup or move him to DH or whatever) . If he keeps making plays, you let it ride.
Imagine watching those box scores... In the immortal words of Willy Wonka "the suspense is terrible... i hope it will last."
Re: Player Defensive Value
This has indeed been discussed before but I don't remember what the answer to that question was. However, unlike that time (which was about a player who actually was a perma-DH in the season in question, no fielding chances whatsoever if I recall correctly), this seems to be an error in the database. This player's season was from the 1920s, meaning the DH role would not be a factor until about half a century later, but also since there are fielding stats for him on baseball reference
Re: Player Defensive Value
I recall when asked gbacci said he'd expect it to default to something like a .900 fielding percentage.
This issue comes up with some of the Negro League players who are listed as OF but don't have fielding % stats. I checked Wild Bill Wright and clicked Compare Across Leagues -- it shows him with a .896 overall. Willard Brown is .928. So that tracks.
Re: Re: Player Defensive Value
I used Harold Baines in a Custom Real Progression league with no Fld % in OF - he made 25 errors. I really had no other options, but it interesting to see the result.
