Pinch Running Question

Pinch Running Question

Hello. After scouring the site I think I know the answer, but wouldn't mind any tips from other owners. Is there a way to increase pinch running frequency? Or at least take better advantage of my speedy bench players? On one of my teams, my lineup is pretty solid from both sides of the plate, so I'm trying to strategically fill in with role players -- i.e. defensive specialists and/or fast runners. I've added an SP9 and SP10 to my bench (and cranked up the steal % for fast runners in Strategy) in hopes they'd pinch run a lot, especially late in games. After monitoring for a while, it looks like pinch running is very infrequent. Any tips? Thanks.

Re: Pinch Running Question

They will enter automatically from the 8th inning on in a 1 or 2 run game - but only for players who are eligible to be replaced for a Defensive replacement

You can set Defensive Replacements to come in as early as the 7th inning and get pinch hitters or runners in as early as that

BUT

Unless you allow your starters to be replaced they won't get run for PERIOD, as far as I know

Anyone?

Re: Re: Pinch Running Question

That is exactly how I have understood it.

Re: Pinch Running Question

Ok cool. Thanks for the info. Looks like my settings are consistent with that, so pinch running must not be that big of a factor. I guess Vince Coleman should start cleaning out his locker!!

Re: Re: Pinch Running Question

It is still a good strategy to have a fast base runner on your bench especially if he can also field -

Lance Johnson 1996 is an excellent option, 9 Speed with a +1.85 Dwar -

plenty of others too

Re: Pinch Running Question

Good tip. I currently have '80 Willie Wilson (Sp9, +2.17dWAR) on that squad. He gets plenty of action as a sub. I also have '87 Vince Coleman (Sp10, -.99 dWAR). If I could have Coleman pinch run 5x/week, wow...he'd be a great weapon.

Re: Re: Pinch Running Question

I always like to have at least two guys with 8 or 9 speed on my bench... they will get that extra bag needed late in games... They will win you couple of more gammes here and there during the season.

If I do have defensive abilities on my starting lineup, I will also carry good defenders on my bench.

Re: Pinch Running Question

Correction, defensive replacement has nothing to do with it. PR will only come in 8th or later when losing or tied. And players who are already fast won’t get run for. Mostly it’s just the 1-5 speed (maybe 6) who get run for. PR won’t come in if bench is already down a bunch due to other replacements. It won’t pinch run if you have no valid replacement at that players position. Other things come into play but there’s no setting for allowing a guy to run or be run for like there is for defense. 6-10 speed will run for 1-5 when losing or tied late.

Re: Re: Pinch Running Question

Ah, ok. That's kind of what I was thinking, but this is the first time I've seen a solid description. Appreciate the info!!

Re: Pinch Running Question

Well, I learned a little myself!

But will a player get run for if they cannot be replaced by sub???

Re: Re: Pinch Running Question

No they won’t. I’ve had that happen a lot of frustrating times. If starting C is being rested and slow backup C is on base with no other possible C replacements, won’t get run for . Any position but C is a good example.
