Luis Arraez
Despite hitting for .323 for the season and striking out 4 times since the all star break.
And also giving the Padres a huge boost since they acquired him.
Luis Arraez is at only 0.9 WAR as per advanced stats thick glasses nerds fabulation metrics.
Let me start to doubt about that stat accuracy...
This is skewed,,,
As an advanced stats nerd, I can surely say that there is lot to review...
Arraez is surely a stats anomally..
Re: Luis Arraez
Let me sum it up for you:
1. 128 of his 153 hits are singles
2. Doesn't walk - 16 in 496 PA
3. Not a good runner - only 9 steals (128 singles batting leadoff and 9
steals ?)
4. Indifferent fielder - career dWAR of -0.1
I'm not saying he's useless - just not as good as you'd think.
Re: Re: Luis Arraez
Agree Sheik with all these negatives, it doesn't look all that good.
But his upside is still obviously there...and not recognized by advanced and sabermetrics stats...
Since he joined the Padres, his positive input surely turns the things around to my eye test.
Jays, who I follow everyday currently have Ernie Clement at 3.8 WAR, he cannot even lace Luis Arraez shoes...
Clemet input as per WAR ( 2.1 OWAR and 1.7DWAR) his numbers would be more than double the value of Luis Arraez umbers...this is a complete joke. In no means would Clement be a better offensive player than Luis Arraez. This is makes no sense, and basically why Jays have sabotage their franchise with Sabermetrics stats obessession...
For Sure Padres would not be where they are if they had Clement instead of Arraez...
As a pitcher, I would prefer facing 9 Ernie Clements than 9 Luis Arraez... No doubt in my mind. Why would Advanced, sabermetrics, WAR not recongnizing this in any way, shape or form ?
Luis Arraez has been a fixture of playoffs team for a reason...
I am personnaly a huge fan of advanced stats, but there is clearly something escaping the mathematics with Luis Arraez...
For me up to now there is 3 obvious flaws in the WAR calculations ... OF fielding metrics (especially in Coors field), 1b Fielding metrics and contact hitters metrics...
Re: Luis Arraez
I wish the Royals had him as their leadoff hitter. My goodness
Re: Re: Luis Arraez
Arraez is similar to Pete Rose without the bad attitude, hustle, flash and arrogance.
Just a singles hitter.
Re: Luis Arraez
For someone that hits like he does, his OBP is surprisingly poor. Definitely doesn’t walk enough for a guy with his eye for the strike zone. If you’re not going to hit for power, you should be an on base machine.
Re: Re: Luis Arraez
I absolutely love Arraez. As a Twins fan, it was hard to see him go. Yes, there are some things that he couldn't do at a high level. But anyone who hits like that has a spot on my roster any day. Not everyone is going to be a Judge, Ohtani, Trout, Betts. But he was entertaining, and very reliable at the plate for what he offered. Plus a cool name and fun to watch.
Re: Luis Arraez
I'm new to this WAR metric, but how does he stack up against others at his position?
Nevertheless, I'd not thumb my nose at a singles hitter whose career avg is over .322 with a .371 obp, 788 ops, and very low k's. To me, every walk is gravy WITH THESE NUMBERS. Of course, extra bases are nice, but those singles can give other base runners a chance to advance two bases...that doesn't happen with walks. Now, if he couldn't even give me a .250 ba, he's better be walking like bonds! 😁
Assuming he doesn't have a hole in his glove...I'd be happy to have him!
Re: Re: Luis Arraez
Arraez is a 1b/DH this year and Clement is 3b/SS. I think everyone can agree that given the choice, they'd rather have Arraez at the plate than Clement. But all WAR's factor in positional adjustments. So it would be better to compare Arraez to other 1b/DH types. When you do that, the .744 OPS doesn't really stack up. Doesn't mean he's useless and I'm sure he did provide a spark for SD - but statistically speaking, he's a high average singles hitting, bad fielding, 1b/DH that doesn't provide much value on the basepaths.
Re: Luis Arraez
Yeah, just like Pete Rose at the end of his career - If he was a competent 2B or SS, he'd be fine, but he's not........
Re: Luis Arraez
Thx, KRT. That's precisely why I asked. I'm currently spreadsheeting all 1980s valid seasons for players just so I can easily compare players by position based on criteria I'm looking to put on the field.
