Importance of Innings Pitched

Importance of Innings Pitched

How much do you guys weigh Inning Pitched in custom leagues when drafting. Ex a guy with 220 IP vs 185 IP. I've heard it makes a difference but I haven't noticed too much.

Re: Importance of Innings Pitched

Makes no difference at all. In progression leagues a player with lower IP or AB would progress more (basic math) but as far as gameplay, none.

Re: Re: Importance of Innings Pitched

Stamina is the stat that matters - it kind of takes the place of Innings Pitched and dictates how long a pitcher will last in each game he’s in.

Re: Importance of Innings Pitched

I meant in terms of progressions. How much of a difference is it?

Re: Re: Importance of Innings Pitched

Pitcher A has 185 IP and gives up 185 hits, so his H9 is 9.0

Pitcher B has 220 IP and gives up 220 hits so his H9 is also 9.0

Progressions add IP (but not hits). So let's say each pitcher increases 5 IP.

Pitcher A now has 190 IP, 185 hits, so 8.7 H9
Pitcher B now has 225 IP, 220 hits, so 8.8 H9

Small but meaningful difference, and that's just one progression. If the pitcher is 22. that will happen 6 times. And it's even bigger for RPs who have lower innings. And if your SP has 100-150 IP, yeah, bigger difference. And I didnt include walks, which decrease with each progression, affecting WHIP more for the lower IP guys. Still, if the higher IP pitcher is starting from a better point, still may be the better choice.

Excellent question. Excellent breakdown by ybb.

Understanding progressions can be extremely important to long-term success in Custom Leagues; for player development and for trades, knowledge of progressions is vital.
