Question for Veteran Commissioners

Question for Veteran Commissioners

I am a first-time commissioner in a custom baseball league. Due to budget restrictions, many good players will not be signed to a contract and will go back into the free agency pool.

When our off-season draft takes place, do those—sometimes high-priced—players play for “free” the next season? In other words, play without a contract for one year. Thanks!

Re: Question for Veteran Commissioners

It depends on how you set up the draft. Some leagues will run a draft with the current free agents (which would allow them to play not under contract or be signed - owners choice), some will create/import rookies for the draft and allow the current free agents to be bid upon (therefore, eliminating the play for free options). I'd say in my experience, the second scenario is more common.
