Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Most years, we see a team for whom the stars seem to align perfectly. They come out of nowhere to truly compete for if not get to the playoffs. I'm talking about teams that at this point almost no one is talking about.

Anyone have any predictions on whom they see as Cindy for 2021?

I'll kick it off with the Angels - just because they have some very good pieces and Lady Luck is due to stop by for a season at some point.

Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Mariners? They have a lot of young guys who have a chance to improve. And the AL West isn’t great, so they have a chance to compete. That is why your Angels pick is a good one as well.

Re: Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

WhiteSox because Tony LaRussa will get them to believe in themselves and he will win 10 games just by outthinking the opposing mgr. Better be careful with this post, i started one similar a few days ago and 2 people have called it quits because they had their feelings hurt lol

Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

I think the point was Cinderella teams. White Sox are a division favorite... not really a Cinderella. I agree they will be good.

Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Since no one liked the Blue Jays as a top team then I’ll list them here as a Cinderella sleeper for the AL; along with my homer pick of the Twins...who have to get a playoff victory sometime soon.

Padres have been irrelevant for years so they could fall into that Cinderella category...and definitely for at least one user here; Mets would be another Cinderella pick for the NL.

Re: Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

I was with you on the Blue Jays! Need some free agent help, but they can win the AL The east for sure.

Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Let's not forget, Miami literally made the playoffs in 2020. If they can win enough games to make it in, then I think we can safely say that ANY team can be good enough, so long as they have the drive to succeed, regardless of the level of talent on the roster 🤔😉

Re: Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Not poking fun here. I never understood the "drive". Or "they just wanted it more". They all want it. Those are things we say when one team executes better than another. I cant stand when announcers say "They just wanted it more". No they didn't. Go ask the losing team, if they think they could have made more effort and that maybe you just weren't motivated to win as much as the other team. LOL
Thats fan talk. It just comes down to talent and execution.
Sometimes lesser talent wins on better execution. OK. Rant done. LOl
Happy New Year!
Oh yea, Cinderella. K.C. and Phillies

Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

Jim,

I'll disagree to a degree. As a player, I didn't love winning but I absolutely HATED losing. I'd do anything to not lose.

As a coach, I looked for players with that same mentality. I do think it gives you a big advantage.

BTW: Phillies, if only!

Re: Cinderella Pick for 2021?

The issue is that it's not necessarily a lack of drive to win, it's more the lack of the gritty mindset that was far more prevalent about 20-30 years ago, the kind of gritty attitude that drove entire teams to overperform by huge standards, like the '96 Yanks, for example. Pretty much their entire roster that year was built on the same concept that Dempsey is describing. Too many players now have the mindset that, yes they want to win, but if they don't, they don't work even harder to improve and return for another go. They kinda just settle for 2nd best, so to speak...

Now, that's not to say they DON'T want it any more than the previous times, far from it for that matter, but in my opinion, it's the guys with the most dead-set-on-improving mindsets that take it that extra mile, that succeed far more when compared to other players
