Daily Draft

Daily Draft

Question for MrBacci

Is there a reason the last 6 Daily draft leagues I’ve participated in, I always “randomly “ find myself with the 1st pick overall?

Doesn’t seem random anymore, I would actually prefer the last pick instead, but I keep getting #1 , then I have to wait 23 more picks until my next one

Like I said, feels “not random”

And while I’m here, if a team(mine) has 4 SP’s ranked 94 and above, and the rest of the league doesn’t have even two elite pitchers on any other team, is there something that is preventing those extremely dominant teams from winning? Seems like it sometimes
Just curious if you’re aware of anything like this.

Thanks

Re: Daily Draft

For the second request, the easy answer would be if you have much better pitching and you’re losing, you have worse hitting or defense. If your ask is does the code have a secret setup to hold back dominant teams, the answer is no. Which league?

I only see you in two daily drafts and yeah, you had the top pick. Six is quite a streak.

Re: Re: Daily Draft

@Colin it would be helpful to know does this happen when you are in the same league? Or when you join new leagues? I've never seen such a streak myself, but I've gotten complaints at times about repetitive slots... One thing I noticed is for a while I felt like I was always 6 or 7, but recently I've found myself all over the draft, so odd streaks can happen. That said, six in a row would be extremely odd.

Re: Daily Draft

@Guy

It’s actually 3 different leagues going on 2 seasons of each, it might actually be more than 6 times in a row, but I can’t remember or go back to check .

I figured I should at least ask to see if something can be done.
Auto leagues: 1416 , 1433 , 48

Thanks Guy

Re: Re: Daily Draft

Every League you are in ( not counting the ones below under " see all 23"

Your Team is the 1st team on the League Leader Board, I have no idea how you could have the 1st overall pick and end up with 3) 100 Ranked
pitchers on your team 2) SP and 1) RP

The 1st I get, but that would mean that in the next 22 picks no one took a Pitcher????

Re: Daily Draft

These are almost all quick drafts, so you wouldn’t even be offered two SPs in that range let alone three. Looking at just two teams, they’re all keepers, and all expiring after current season. Trades are one possibility, but my guess is it’s related to the season transition. You can sign a player with 2020 stats and then when the transition is made to 2021 stats you still have them. So you could sign 2020 players who may not have been ranked high, knowing you are getting their great 2021 stats when the change happens. Just throwing that out there.

You can see Scherzer (who had a bad 2020) expiring salary is $6 and Peralta $9, so I think I proved my point. in 2021 stats they cost $17 to start. It’s a shady way to play but how the game works.

Re: Re: Daily Draft

Good detective work. Yes some people definitely leverage this strategy because they know of the season stats cutover. If someone is already signed, I don’t enforce a new salary when the stats change. It does put a newbie at a disadvantage but then again new owners in Keepers are usually at a disadvantage already in the first season.

Re: Daily Draft

I thought if you signed a player on say his 2020 Season stats you could not change his season while he was under contract? What am I missing here and why is it allowed?

Re: Daily Draft

2020 stat leagues eventually turn into 2021 stat leagues. When that happens, all players stats change but the contracts don’t. If you have a guy signed you don’t want anymore, you send a message to Guy and he clears it. But also, you can sign a cheap 2020 the final season, and he’ll change to his 2021 stats the next. Only morals prevent it.

Re: Re: Daily Draft

and now he's outed himself.

And in final answer to whether there is a code or something to stop great teams from winning Rings? it's called Karma -

I really don't get people who use underhanded and unfair advantage methods to win a game that is supposed to be fair to all, do you get some bad teams sometimes? of course, but you get some really good ones at times too- fluffing up your win % by dubious methods? WEAK

Glad I never play Best of 2021 Season -

Re: Daily Draft

I don’t think he’s doing anything several other vets in Best of Last Season havent done. This is the first time it’s been raised as some sort of problem to my knowledge. I guess because I was aware it happens I saw it as a strategy that if I was competing in those leagues I just had to try to overcome for that one cross over season.

Re: Daily Draft

It’s not one season if you sign them for the max two, but yeah, not surprised people would do it.

Re: Re: Daily Draft

Yeah that’s true. I guess if you think about this, how often does someone improve that much, and if they do, don’t you still have to have them on your roster with the lousy stats until they convert? I guess you could strategically stash someone you know is going to vastly improve.

Re: Daily Draft

Yup

The teams that I would have had 3-4 Elite SP were quick draft teams (not daily)
….and yes I accumulated talent during the switchover year

If I wanted to win only 50% of the time, I would be flipping a coin instead.

I didn’t say or do anything I didn’t want to, if you have any questions please ask.

Thanks for the kind words Sin

Re: Re: Daily Draft

Your most welcome Colin, there's a school of thought that says just because its possible to do something, it doesn't mean you should. I trust you are proud of your achievements.

If you are aware of a quirk in the game that gives you an unfair advantage - and having 3) 90+ starting pitchers IS an unfair advantage in quick drafts -
then its not really an honest action, but anything to win for some people I guess."

I sincerely doubt I'm the only guy that feels this way either, I'd say good luck but you don't seem to need luck - you have found a way to game the system

Re: Daily Draft

The Larger issue may be allowing guys under contract under the last seasons stats knowing that they going to vastly improve and go from say a 71 ranked pitcher to a 90+ ranked pitcher is that the Draft usually only has a limited number of 90+ ranked SP and RP,.
I assume these guys that go from say 71 to 95 also take up some of the possible 90+ guys available in the draft making it really hard for other owners to get even 1

am I wrong?

Re: Re: Daily Draft

That's always been true of Daily Draft Keepers... it does definitely break the intent of Quick Draft, unless he's getting some of those in the Supplemental Draft.

But you're still choosing to consume three valuable roster spots with SPs and bypassing hitting, defense, etc. So as Brian said, the strategy doesn't always pay off.

The original post asked if there was some logic designed to make someone lose in that scenario, and I can promise there is not. In most leagues the other SPs aren't garbage and if you back them up with defense and a lineup (especially if you build it specifically to your park) you can win without great SPs. In fact, I have a team going right now I might write a story about because I drafted elite pitching and I couldn't win. Then I swapped two high ranked hitters out for stud defenders and went from well under .500 at midseason to the #3 seed. And I did that only because I started copying the good teams. :)

Re: Daily Draft

I don't see anything wrong with it. Generally speaking, if the rules allow it, and you're astute enough to spot it, then go for it.

Re: Re: Daily Draft

And now we see an example of why people don't like lawyers. Loop-holes.
