Defensive Subs

Defensive Subs

Hi. DWAR/substitution question here. I usually keep most of my team set as "can be replaced." It seems like that's the best way to keep your in-game strategy flexible. Plus I know it says defensive subs only enter the game if they are better defensively. Last night I had 3 unusual subs on 2 different teams. I won't detail all of them. But the strangest one was Larry Sheets (.973/-1.52) entering the game in the 9th for Andre Dawson (.980/+2.13). If there was a "leave your glove at home" setting, I'd use that for Sheets. Anyway, curious if this is something I'm overlooking, or if these 3 moves are just a weird coincidence that probably won't occur again.

Re: Defensive Subs

Because Sheets has worse FLD and dwar he shouldnt come
In anyway, but you can make sure he never does by marking him as no to replace anyone. He must be set to yes as a def replacement.

Re: Defensive Subs

If you post the boxscore, one of the gurus here could probably tell you exactly what happened. Maybe it wasn't a true defensive replacement.

Also, put Larry Sheets as not able to be a defensive sub.

Re: Re: Defensive Subs

First off there is no reason at all to ever have Andre Dawson replaced for Defensive purposes, he was not Pinch Hit for either.

Dawson is a +2.13 DWar OF - you want that kind of Defense in Center Field unless you have a higher DWar OF- then put Dawson in either Left or Right but in the game.

You should change him to NOT be substituted for - however, even if you do change him to can't be substituted for, unless you also say he can't be pinch hit for - then you could lose his glove late in a game that way too.

You also need to be careful about marking players as unable to enter as a Fielder, you don't want someone out of position (like an Out fielder playing 2B due to being the only guy left

Re: Re: Defensive Subs

Actually, You should not put all your players on an auto yes that they should be replaced...

You should only put this tag to a very few players, most notably your defensive liabilities....

You wan't Dawson in the field all day long... so he should not be tag as a can be replaced guy...

Re: Defensive Subs

Thanks for all the input. The box score link is below. One note on limiting the number of "replaceable" players to only poor defensive players. I've recently learned (I think) that if I don't allow Sheets to enter a game, it could also lead to a different problem. For example, let's say McGwire (1B) pinch hits for Wilson (OF)...now there could be no OF to go in defensively so either McGwire plays out of position OR he doesn't pinch hit at all. This isn't what I'd call a major problem. Mostly I'm just curious about the strategy part.

Re: Re: Defensive Subs

I looked at your team and honestly, you don't even need Larry Sheets - your team has 8 Outfielders on it and only 1) 3B and SS what happens if Templeton or Schmidt get injured?

Believe it or not, I would rather have John Castino or Bill Russell Riding the Pine but ready to step in rather than carrying Sheets. you simply don't need him

Re: Defensive Subs

If your OF gets hit or run for, the next OF on your bench replaces him. That’s not related to def replacement settings, that automatically happens.

Re: Re: Defensive Subs

@Yankee. Right, but there was no other switch. It was a straight up defensive replacement. I'm going to assume it was a weird blip. Seems like no one else (including me) has seen this before. In the meantime I've confirmed that Sheets won't be entering on D anymore lol

Re: Defensive Subs

I was responding to ‘ if I don't allow Sheets to enter a game, it could also lead to a different problem’. It has no affect on that. Sheets will still come in if he has to, even if you marked him not to straight up replace.

Re: Re: Defensive Subs

Oh right. I gotcha now.
